LED Cloak
03/06/2010

This is the garment I made for "Material World" class, which I found inspiration from the fabric from CMTEL. The design comes with 2 layers, the inner shirt is sewed with Lilypad LEDs by conductive thread, and some big red LEDs to enhance brightness; the outer layer is a cloak made with window screen & plastic sheet for catching the projection of the lights.

Inner layer shirt with LEDs. The Arduino board is programmed to pulse the Lilypad LEDs, which change rates dynamically.

The shadow patterns on the cloak have a very digital looking, and vary with body movements.

My Inspiration is a set of colorful weaving fabric from CMTEL (Art Center material lab). The randomness in the weaving pattern has an elegant aesthetic, makes you wanna look at every detail on it. After playing it for a while, I found that when you twist and fold, the overlapping layers create quite interesting visual patterns.

Materials:

Window Screen from OSH (replacement of expensive European fabric).

Semi-transparent Sheet
